Given how much dirt and dust you find off-trail, it’s not surprising that ATVs can get absolutely caked in filth after just a few trips. However, letting your ATV stay dirty for long periods of time can make it more vulnerable to rust and deterioration. That’s why Four Wheeling For Less has created this guide to cleaning your ATV.

Pre-Soak the Mud & Scrape

The best way to remove caked-on mud from your ATV is with a plastic mud scraper. The scraper should be able to remove the muck without harming your ATV’s paint job. If you don’t have a mud scraper handy, repeatedly hosing off your ATV with water should do the trick.

Pressure Wash the Grime

If there is still grime clinging to the surface of your ATV, a pressure washer will usually take it right off. Those who don’t have a pressure washer can make do with a hose and nozzle. However, the second method won’t be as effective, so you might end up spending more time scrubbing the dirt off by hand.

Add Soap & Scrub

Your next step will be to scrub down your ATV using soapy water and a wash mitt or sponge. Use bike soap or automotive detergent to ensure that the soap doesn’t damage your ATV. Be especially thorough when cleaning the plastic parts, wheels, the frame, and the seat. A stiff brush can be useful for dragging dirt and oil out of any nooks and crannies. If any part of your ATV is too oily to easily wash, use a degreaser to make things more manageable.

Dry & Polish

Once you’re done scrubbing, use a lint-free towel to dry off your ATV, or just let it air dry. If you’re worried about your ATV rusting, use an air compressor to help get water out of the hard-to-reach cracks and crevices. Finally, spray your ATV with plastic polish and wipe it down. Be careful not to get any on the seat, as this can make things slippery and lead to an accident on your next ride.
